Virginia State Bar IP Law Section -- 22nd Annual Fall CLE Weekend (Oct. 1-2, 2010)

The Virginia State Bar Intellectual Property Law Section will be holding its Twenty-Second Annual Fall Weekend CLE on October 1-2, 2010, at The Williamsburg Lodge, Williamsburg, Virginia. It will run on Friday, October 1, from 12:45 p.m. until 6:15 p.m., followed by a reception sponsored by Thomson Reuters®, and on Saturday, October 2, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:40 p.m., followed by a luncheon. 

The featured topics and speakers include:

  • Post-Bilski -- A discussion of the impact of the Supreme Court’s (expected) decision in In re Bilski presented by Erika H. Arner, Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, counsel for Bilski, and Thomas Krause, Associate Solicitor at the USPTO 
  • PTO Patent Practice -- Viewpoints from Sharon R. Barner, Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Deputy Director of the USPTO
  • PTO Trademark Practice -- Viewpoints from Meryl Hershkowitz, Acting Deputy Commissioner for Trademark Operations
  • Ownership of IP in the Employment Context -- Mike Jacobs and William Sauers of Crowell & Moring, along with Ross Vincenti, Deputy General Counsel of Clearwire Corporation, will address the law relating to this ubiquitous issue
  • The Google Book Settlement -- A presentation on the legal issues and implications by Professor Matthew Sag of DePaul University School of Law
  • eDiscovery 2.0 -- A presentation on the current state of ediscovery with Magistrate Judge Waugh Crigler of the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia, Robert Angle of Troutman Sanders LLP, and Chris Forstner of Murphy McGonigle
  • Ethics in IP – Professor Hricik from Mercer University School of Law will discuss interesting ethical issues that arise in the IP realm (1.5 hours)
  • Gilbert Hyatt v. Kappos -- Aaron Panner of Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evans & Figle, PLLC, counsel for Hyatt, will discuss this interesting case and its implications
